Hello Again and Saving the Adverb

Hello cyberworld. I'm just giving out a minor introduction for this first post. If you haven't read it, read my study abroad blog (link in the left menu) to learn a little more about me. This time, my adventures have little to do with the rain forest and more to do with intellectual thinking. But let's face it, nobody who reads this really wants to be intellectually stimulated, all they want is to read something witty that they feel they either a.) agree with or b.) don't agree with and can argue against.

So I am going to start with something most people will be happy with: a Harry Potter quote, talking about the power of words.

"Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it." Albus Dumbledore, Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling

I'm going to be honest with you: this blog is part of a class that I am taking called Writing for Media. I would probably not be writing this blog if it wasn't a course requirement. But here I am, so I am going to make the most of it.

On that note, I am going to take you back two classes ago to when we watched a clip from Boy Meets World, which was one of my favorite shows growing up. The class discussed how shows that are produced by Disney don't have the staying power that Boy Meets world has because the new shows just don't hit home like the older ones. Here is my opinion about why they don't. The writing just isn't as honest; it's not sincere and it shows. The writers focus on on basic life lessons like don';t lie and be good to your friends. Golden Rule stuff. They are afraid to go into anything more serious because they know that they can't rate it G. There is actually an episode of Boy Meets World where Corey gets drunk under age, but they never show that episode on Disney because it is "inappropriate" for their target audience. Do you want my opinion? Well, you're going to get it whether you do or don't.

If you keep writing to today's youth like they are idiots, they will grow up to be illiterate idiots who cannot properly express themselves.

And, on that note, if kids in television shows continue to act as though they can do whatever they want and get away with it, then guess what:

All of the younger generations who watch this crap are going to grow up thinking that they can do whatever they want and get away with it.

I want to make one thing exponentially clear: I LOVE Disney. Disney movies are like my not-so-secret obsession. I grew up with the best of Disney movies - Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, etc. - even their new movies still blow my mind (Tangled, by the way, is absolutely awesome), but their television writing taste needs to start thinking about what they are putting out there. Because the television writers at channels like Disney and Nickelodeon (think "ICarly, where the parents have never made a single appearance because they are gone working on something or another) are the reason that today's children tend to be insufferable. And that's all I have to say about it.

To recap: I love Disney. Which is why I care that they are putting out shows where the writing calls for nothing other than loud actors and obnoxious acting.
My only request: Please remind us why we love you.
You decide: Disney's recent shows, Miracle or Monster?

On a completely unrelated note (because I have said everything I have to say on that subject) - I have noticed recently that when I talk I misuse adverbs. I never put the "ly" at the end of my words when they are supposed to be there. And it is something that a lot of people do when they talk. So I am taking a stand and saving the adverb from oral extinction. Please join me.

Until next time,
Chau
